Gematria is a system of assigning numeric values to words, letters, and phrases. This ancient system has been in use since the time of the Greeks and can be found in texts from many different religions and cultures.
Gematria is based on the fact that certain numbers represent fundamental concepts. A numerical value is assigned to each letter in an alphabet. In Jewish gematria, the numbers range from 1-400 (for Hebrew) or 1-800 (for Aramaic). For example, in Hebrew gematria "A" = 1, "B" = 2, "C" = 3, etc… The sum of values for each word is then calculated by adding together all of the letters that make up that particular word or phrase.
In Gematria, words with similar sums represent related ideas. For example, the words "Shema" (Hear) and "Shmah" (Listen) both have a sum of 87 in Jewish gematria, so they are considered related concepts. Other uses for gematria include determining whether a phrase carries special significance or has prophetic meaning.
In some systems of Gematria, such as kabbalah which originated in Judaism and continues to be practiced today), sophisticated mathematical calculations are used to reveal hidden meanings behind words and symbols. By combining two sets of letters with similar numerical sums e.g., two names of God - it is possible to discover hidden connections between them that would otherwise go unnoticed. In this system there are 72 primary names which possess great power and can be used to unlock profound secrets about ourselves and the universe we inhabit.
gematria numbers can also used to explore sacred stories more deeply and extract spiritual lessons as well as testaments to faith. By looking at multiple numerical combinations in various areas such as history or biblical texts it is possible to find deeper spiritual meanings that may otherwise go unnoticed or unspoken about.
Although the exact origins are unclear, it's believed that gematria was first used by Rabbi Akiva around 100 CE who assigned values to each letter of the Hebrew alphabet for various interpretations and commentaries on sacred texts like Torah/ Tanakh/ Bible or other religious writings such as Talmud or Zohar/ Kabbalah literature. It continues to have a strong presence in many religious traditions such as Hinduism, Islam, Christian theology & mysticism today where it is believed these numeric combinations provide insight into how reality works at its most fundamental level & truthfully explain life's mysteries & secrets beyond what we can perceive with our physical senses alone.
